TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO; AND WHEN HE IS OLD HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT. (PROVERBS 22:6)

Notre Dame College:

Integrating Different Learning Elements and Fostering Students’ Positive Attitude Towards Adversities

Founded in 1967, Notre Dame College (NDC) was the first Catholic school established in Hong Kong by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). “Diligence – Fidelity – Piety” is our school motto. We cultivate our students by imparting knowledge and eulogizing the Gospel. We nurture them with compassion for the disadvantaged social groups, respect to the Lord and love for others as well.

We have set very high standards in both academic and non-academic areas. For academic aspects, there have been improvements in students’ DSE results, school value-added scores for many subjects and the number of graduates admitted to JUPAS undergraduate programmes for the past few years. In HKDSE 2021, our school had 5 students who obtained 5** or 5* in core subjects. The best student obtained the following result: 5** for 3 subjects, 5* for one subject and 5 for 2 subjects. For JUPAS results 2021, our school had 28% of Form 6 students who were successfully admitted to courses in 8 publicly funded universities or Metropolitan University. 4 students and one student were admitted to the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) respectively. One student was admitted to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) originally and he decided to transfer to Tsinghua University, Peking to study Civil Engineering.

For the next few years, our school will try to integrate different learning elements, use online teaching resources and make good use of assessment data to promote students’ learning. Diversified teaching and learning strategies would be adopted and curriculum would be tailored to cater for increasing learning diversity and foster good learning habits so as to improve the learning and teaching effectiveness of our school. To arouse students’ learning interests, the use of e-learning strategies will be highly encouraged in the classroom. Interactive display and visualizers are installed in every classroom to enhance learning and teaching. Students can be equipped with iPads so that lessons can be conducted with e-learning materials.

Also another focus is to carry out STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. Our AI Education Course were nominated by PCM Computer Magazine as the Award Winner for the Application of Technology in the School in Best of IT Award 2020-21. The school will add a new school based subject, known as STEM education for Form 1 and 2 students. STEM topics like Water Rockets, Hovercrafts and AI topics would be included to carry out inquiry-based learning. A co-curricular activity, known as Scientific Inventor, has been organized to set up a platform for students to invent new products or modify existing products to train creative skills.

Besides, we have continued to extend our English learning environment by inviting different native English-speaking teachers from Australia and Europe to organize English learning activities for our students. During the summer vacations, our students are also subsidized to have exchange opportunities to join the immersion programmes in Australia.

For non-academic aspects, our concern is to build a Harmonious and Healthy Campus through the teaching of 5 Core Values of Catholic Education: Truth, Justice, Love, Life and Family. NDC is well known for our school spirit filled with love and care. Our school has received a Silver Award for “Health-promotion” from the World Health Organization, as well as a “Caring School Award” from the Hong Kong Christian Service for 10 consecutive years. Our students are polite and have a strong sense of belonging. Parents and Alumni show support and trust for the school.

Besides, our school always encourages students to build teamwork, self-confidence and a sense of achievement through co-curricular activities. As a result, our Girls’ Choir, Baseball, Basketball and Football Teams have achieved outstanding results in inter-school competitions during recent years.

With the tremendous support from parents, alumni, teachers and students, I look forward to having a better NDC in terms of academic and non-academic developments in the coming years.

God Bless!
